Polka dot is one of the most popular patterns used in fashion. It exudes the simplicity needed to make something versatile and classic. Smaller polka dots look elegant, while bigger ones look modern and trendy.
Although we’re not sure when polka dots first appeared, they became very popular in the late nineteenth century in the UK. It wasn’t until 1926, when Miss America was photographed wearing a polka dot swimsuit that they became common in clothing in the US. They began popping up everywhere during the late 40s and early 50s, when the pinup girl was in. I believe they’ll never go out of style and they look great on anyone. Even some modern brides search for a polka dot bridal gown.
My closet is full of polka dot clothes, this dress being one of favorites. I got it at Walmart for $12 and I’ve had it for years. I’m able to wear different colors with it because it’s black. You can never go wrong with black or white polka dots. On the other hand, colored polka dots can be hard to wear often not just because of the limited number of matching articles of clothing, but also because they draw more attention and people are likely to remember you wearing that orange on yellow polka dot skirt two months ago at your sister’s baby shower. Or you know, wherever.
Are you a fan of polka dots? Do you find them cute or corny?
